History . . .

In the aftermath of the devastation created by Hurricane Katrina, a group of Pastors from the Newark, New Jersey area felt the need to assist people of the Gulf Region who were impacted by the storm.

Fifty-four (54) volunteers were assembled from across the state to take part in a ten-day mission to the Gulf Coast Region, (September 7-16, 2005) to assist the American Red Cross based in Montgomery, Ala. From Montgomery, the volunteers were dispatched to various areas of the region; Tuskegee, Ala, Pensacola, Fla. Jackson, and Hattiesburg, Miss.

After walking in the midst of such a devastating tragedy, we returned home realizing there was so much more to be done, and wondered, what more could we do? We decided that we could better serve as a Christian based organization that provides assistance through the church to the victim’s of disaster for as long as there is a legitimate need. It is to this end, Churches for Disaster Relief was organized.

Churches for Disaster Relief operates primarily on donations. For persons wishing to make monetary donations, please make checks or money orders payable to: Churches for Disaster Relief, and send to P.O. Box 4061 Newark, NJ 07112
